Am I suitable for teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening can cover up most types of teeth stains and discolouration. These include:

  • stains from food and drink, such as coffee, tea and red wine
  • stains from tobacco
  • discolouration from poor oral hygiene
  • discolouration from natural ageing

These treatments cannot whiten:

  • discolouration caused by injury or trauma to the tooth
  • discolouration as a side-effect of a health condition or medication
  • dental restorations such as fillings, crowns and bridges

Not everyone is suitable for teeth whitening. Your initial consultation is a chance for our dentists to examine your teeth and gums and check your dental history to look for anything that needs to be addressed.

It's important that your teeth and gums are healthy before a cosmetic treatment can begin, as oral health problems can affect the success of the treatment. If we notice signs of a problem such as tooth decay or gum disease, this will need to be treated as a priority. If there may be an underlying problem causing your teeth to darken, we will also try to identify and address this.

If you are eligible for teeth whitening and you're happy to continue, we can then arrange a second consultation where your dentist will explain the different whitening options we offer and can answer any questions you have about teeth whitening cost and risks.

Call (02) 9232 3900 or contact us online to book your initial FREE consultation for teeth whitening at Sydney CBD Dental.

Teeth whitening Sydney - before and after

One patient's teeth whitening experience

In-chair laser teeth whitening

Our dentists use the Philips Zoom whitening system, which offers improved patient comfort and fast and consistent results compared to some other whitening systems. We carefully apply strong bleaching gel to the teeth, which is activated by a UV light.

Using Philips Zoom whitening, teeth can be whitened up to 8 shades in a single appointment, with little to no irritation. To help you maintain your new smile, we recommend having a repeat treatment every 2 to 3 years.

Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening Sydney

If you're thinking about having your teeth whitened by our professional dentists in Sydney CBD, we'll walk you through the process during your consultation appointment so you know what to expect. You'll also have the opportunity to ask us any questions you have about the treatment, to help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

Laser teeth whitening at Sydney CDB Dental involves 3 steps:

Step 1

You will need a professional clean prior to whitening for best results. Whitening procedures may not be performed if you have too much tartar or plaque build-up and a professional clean is strongly recommended prior to the whitening procedure. The clean will incur additional fees. Please call 02 8880 0959 to find out more.

Step 2

We'll make sure your mouth and throat are protected during the treatment by fitting a retractor. This also helps to hold your mouth open during the whitening process. We'll also apply a protective coating to your gums and provide you with safety glasses to protect your eyes from UV rays.

Step 3

We can then begin applying the whitening agent to your teeth in stages. After each stage, we'll focus a UV light onto the gel. This causes it to activate and start breaking down stains on the tooth's surface.

This process is usually repeated 3 times over 45 minutes, depending on the individual and how much whitening is needed. You may notice a difference right away, but it can sometimes take a few minutes or hours for your new white smile to fully appear.

Teeth whitening FAQs

Zoom! Teeth whitening is more effective because it offers powerful results in just the one session. By utilising advanced blue LED-light technology and high intensity gel, it can whiten your teeth by up eight shades all in-chair. Best of all, its long-lasting, there's no need to continually come back for touch-ups and with proper care and maintenance.

There is no need to worry about any pain or any damage to your enamel or teeth, Zoom! uses a LED-light technology that is designed to protect enamel and reducing sensitivity to your teeth, whilst in treatment. We also use rubber seals to protect your lips and gums.

  • In just the one session (1.5 hours), whiten your teeth up to 8 shades
  • Instant results that will brighten throughout the day
  • Long-lasting results

Teeth whitening is considered a safe treatment when it's carried out by or under the guidance of a professional dentist. However, these treatments are not recommended for people under 18 years of age or women who are pregnant or lactating.

As with any dental treatment, there are certain risks and side-effects associated with teeth whitening that patients should be aware of. These include chemical burns, if whitening gel comes into contact with the gums or other soft tissues, and increased sensitivity of the teeth.

These risks can be reduced considerably when you choose in-chair whitening and follow your dentist's instructions.

Teeth whitening is not a permanent treatment, and you will need to schedule repeat treatments at regular intervals if you want to maintain your white smile. We recommend in-chair whitening every 2–3 years.

You can keep your teeth white for longer by avoiding sources of stains – such as coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco – and following good oral hygiene.

Over-the-counter or take-home products - while it's possible to buy whitening toothpastes and strips from stores, the Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends using a product provided by your dentist.

Over-the-counter products take longer to produce results with treatment lasting 2 weeks and requiring a 15 minute session twice a day. It also tends to produce less reliable results and less targeted with other parts of the mouth being included during treatment. Over-the-counter whitening products also pose more risk to your teeth and mouth, they tend to be more aggressive yet not as strong or reliable compared to an in-chair treatment used under the guidance of a dental professional

Teeth whitening is strictly a cosmetic procedure that can be chosen for aesthetic reasons and does not have an impact on your oral health. However, our dentists in Sydney will give you a complete oral health assessment before your treatment to see if there are any issues that should be treated as a priority.

Not everyone has naturally white teeth, and it's possible to have good oral health even if your teeth are darker or have stains. Teeth whitening is a personal choice based on individual preference.
